This is an introduction into the idea of conducting research. It is not at all a guide. If you are looking for a how-to this is definitely not it. I was rather disappointed based upon the description. It’s not a bad book if you are new to research concepts and don’t know why you would conduct qualitative research over quantitative, but if you are looking for insight into specific techniques, you’d be better off buying a stat textbook or a book specialized on one aspect of research. Again, not a bad book for someone new to the field, but definitely not a guide.

Conducting research for research’s sake or collecting information that isn’t usable is so common in the world of market research today. Anne Beall’s book helps readers understand how to craft research strategically to ensure that it supports organizational decision making. The book is clear, concise and loaded with content. It’s a quick read with discrete suggestions that will improve your market research efforts.

Strategic Market Research is a practical, well-written guide to conducting effective consumer research. Dr. Beall efficiently covers each step of the research process, from planning through execution and analysis, delivering a wealth of knowledge in each chapter. This is not an encyclopedic “how to” guide, but rather a concise primer on “how to do it better.” Strategic Market Research is highly recommended for marketers who use market research (e.g., brand teams, product managers, advertising and PR agencies) to develop a clear appreciation for the difference between using research to collect data versus skillfully using it to obtain rich insights that support informed fact-based decision-making. Chapter 9: “Common Pitfalls in Market Research” should be required reading prior to every research planning meeting.

Fantastic tutorial on implementing a strategic marketing research approach. Well laid out, easy to read, I’ll be including this as required reading for both the UCLA extension class I teach as well as for internal use, integrated into our firms training programs. A great resource for those just starting out in market research as well as for seasoned professionals who have been struggling with getting actionable results from their research efforts.
