John Jantsch, Duct Tape Marketing author and the people at Palo Alto Software have created what I believe is a solid product for small and mid-sized businesses. It contains a structure to complete a well thought out actionable plan and allows you to monitor the progress you are making. Great instructions, with the videos embedded of John Jantsch giving helpful tips along the way.

Several years ago, I purchased Marketing Plan Pro 6 to help me create a marketing plan for my employer. The software was compehensive, but the training materials were lousy and there was no simple way to get started. I basically used it one time, and after investing about 100 hours into it, found it to be too cumbersome to go back to the software.

Now, I just started with a new company, and with no previous marketing plan to work with, I needed to get some software again. Although skeptical, I chose to give Marketing Plan Pro 11 a shot, and I am quite happy I did. The software is still not perfect … but the training materials and quick start capabilities make all the difference in the world. Not only am I almost done with my marketing plan, I am making 3 versions (one for each of our business units). To date, I have about 12 hours invested.

For future versions, I would like to recommend Palo Alto create a version that allows a couple of users to collaborate on the same marketing plan, because I am subbing some research tasks out, and I want my staff to “take ownership” of the plan and get into it, rather than having this be a top down initiative.

I can’t say enough about Marketing Plan Pro powered by Duct Tape. I used the old version for a marketing plan and it was more about stats and measurements.

The new version adds the element of activity, which is really the missing ingredient this software needed. Another improvement is that it offers three levels…a short version, a basic version, and a detailed one. So whether you’re a big picture or detailed person or somewhere in between, this software works just fine.

Finally, the audio from John Jantsch really provides more good direction for the user than on the old version. Versions aside, it’s easy to see a business flourishing by just following the steps outlined. I highly recommend this planning tool.
